Long Island Farm
LONG ISLAND FARM EXCURSION (4 hours) There is a minimum of 35 passengers - 44 passengers maximum. (There may be two possible departures am and pm depending on length of time in Stanley). Passengers will be escorted by a professional English speaking guide through key battlefield mountains on the hour long journey to Long Island Farm (this journey takes in fantastic scenery of East Falklands, passing close by a military radar site, Estancia Farm, to the head of Berkeley Sound and the opportunity to learn about the historical Port Louis Settlement on the way and through the unique stone runs). Long Island is situated approximately 20 miles from Stanley and is a 22,000 acre sheep farm which belongs to 6th generation Falkland Island family (the Watson’s) who still live and farm in completely traditional Falkland style. They farm using skilled sheep dogs and Falkland Island bred horses, milk their own cows, make their own bread, butter and cream and use the traditional fuel peat which is a tradition that has nearly died out in the Falklands. The tour will commence with sheep work using the skilled sheep dogs. There will be a sheep shearing demonstration and an opportunity to buy some genuine Falkland wool (rated as some of the finest wool in the world). A horse gearing display will take place explaining the horse gear and how the farm uses horses to work. There will be a delicious spread of tea/coffees and home-baked cookies and savouries in the farmhouse kitchen with Mrs Glenda Watson. There is a two mile long white sand beach directly in front of the house teeming with shore birds and visitors are welcome to stroll anywhere around the farm seeing how farmers live in the Falkland Islands, they can view the domestic gardens which are brimming with produce and furnished with timber from the French wreck Uranie (wrecked off Long Island approximately 1829). This is a magnificent tour and one not to be missed, it is also the very first of its kind to be offered in the Islands. Guests will need to bring waterproof warm clothing, a warm hat and wear sensible shoes. Water will be provided on the coach for passengers and every passenger will receive an information pack about the farm.
