Bluff Cove Lagoon

The schedule for your tour on a private farm will include:

            ·        Collection from the public jetty by Landrover or coach.

·        A 30 minute drive from Stanley on a tarmac/surfaced road.

·        30 minutes ‘off the road’ drive to the Penguin Rookery - there are approximately 1000 pairs of Gentoo penguins nesting by a beautiful sand beach.  Magellanic or Jackass penguins also nest in burrows close by and the rookery is occasionally visited by up to 5 King penguins.  Skuas, Gulls and Snowy Sheathbills hang around the rookery hoping to take eggs or chicks from careless penguins.  Upland Geese, Ruddy headed geese, Magellanic Oyster catchers, Falklands flightless Steamer ducks and many other birds nest nearby.   From December, there is a colony of Magellanic gulls, dolphin gulls and South American terns also nest among them.  The site is very photogenic with a large lagoon and long sand beach which is occasionally patrolled by Sea Lions from a nearby island.  Dolphins occasionally play in the surf where the waves break on the beach.  Diddle-Dee (a local plant) grows in abundance and the red berry is edible but it is very sharp and is an acquired taste!

·        60 minutes will be allowed at the site, giving ample opportunities for photographs or a stroll along the beach.

·        Return journey by Landrover or coach to the public jetty.

 Total running time 2˝ hours.

Along the route you will have excellent opportunities for panoramic photographs of Stanley and the outlying countryside, mountains, harbour and coastline.  The road passes through several stone runs - an unusual river of stones that are typical of the East Falkland landscape.

For the “off-road” experience you are transferred to a 4x4 vehicle  to reach the penguins.  This trip will give you a taste of traditional Falklands off road driving skills and a view of typical sheep farming country.  The track passes the lamb marking pens where, for generations farmers have marked their lambs.

Minimal walking is required.  Sensible footwear and clothing are recommended and even if it’s a dull day, be sure to put on some sunscreen as the wind and sun can burn.  There are no toilets available on the trip so a stop before the journey is recommended.
